At the start of each semester the University holds a Welcome and Orientation programme for new international students.

Below you will find details of our Welcome & Orientation programme for January 2020. The programme includes lots of useful and interesting sessions and exciting activities to help you make new friends and get settled in to life at Queen's University.

Airport Meet & Greet

Welcome to Belfast!

Our Welcome Team will be based at the Belfast City and Belfast International Airport.

The team will be there to provide you with important information and to assist you in booking a taxi or getting a bus to Elms, BT1, BT2 and BT9.

Location: Lanyon Building Canada Room & Council Chamber is/are located on the first floor of the Lanyon Building, in the centre of the building. Lift access to this room is via a passenger lift through the Welcome Centre on the ground floor. Outside the shop opening hours (17:00), access can only be requested through QUB Security (028 9097 5099).

Erasmus / Study Abroad students will receive their Welcome letter at Programme Registration. If you arrive outside of this time, please collect from International Student Support, 1st Floor, Student Guidance Centre.

Buffet Lunch & Meet the Services Event

Take some time to get to know your new peers, meet some of the QUB Services and enjoy a delicious buffet lunch in the spectacular surrounding of The Great Hall from 13.00-14.00. Some of the services in attendance willl include:

Enrolment Appointments with Advisers to finalise module selection will take place from 14.00-17.00.

Enrolment and Registration

Online Registration, Document Checks and Student Cards

Student Guidance Centre, First Floor 10.00-17.00

Support will be available to help you complete enrolment and registration. Please bring the required identification and documents (detailed in your enrolment letter). Please see your enrolment letter for your timeslot.

All non-EU/EEA nationals will need to complete an Immigration Document Check during the Enrolment and Registration process.

FREE Welcome Meal organised by Friends International

Enjoy a free dinner along with live music, games, prizes and new friends!

You are cordially invited to a free Welcome Meal organised by Friends International from 19:30-21:30, Fisherwick Presbyterian Church, 2 Chlorine Gardens, BT9 5DJ

The event includes dinner, live music, games, prizes and a chance to connect with new international students and local friends.

Register now to secure your place!

This event has been organised by local churches and the Christian Union in partnership with Friends International, an organisation made up of Christians who wish to offer friendship to all international students of all faiths or none. 

You have the option to meet in the foyer of Elms Treehouse at 19:00 to be guided by local students to the event location.

St George's Market

Join us and visit St George’s Market

St George’s Market is one of Belfast’s oldest attractions. It was built between 1890 and 1896 and is one of the best markets in the UK and Ireland. It has been selected for numerous local and national titles and awards for its fresh, local produce and great atmosphere. 

The Sunday market has a special emphasis on local arts and crafts, offering more local craftspeople the opportunity to show off their talents. You can also expect live music from local bands.

The free city centre and marketlink service runs every 10 minutes from Monday to Saturday and every 20 minutes on Sundays.

When the bus departs from St George’s Market, the bus has to travel via the following streets:

  • May Street (City Hall)
  • Donegall Square South
  • Chichester Street
  • Chichester Street (Victoria Square)
  • Bridge Street (for CastleCourt and Royal Avenue)
  • North Street (Lower Garfield St)

Your Buddy will be there to help you with questions you might have about the local community and Queen’s, and if they don’t know the answer they will be able to signpost you to the right place!

By signing up, the Students’ Union will keep you in the loop about some Coffee Catch-Ups they will be holding throughout the semester as an opportunity for you and your Buddy to socialise, along with other students involved in the Scheme.

They’ll also send you info about events: by the International Student Societies at Queen’s; from different departments at Queen's; and across Belfast that they think that you and your Buddy may be interested in going along to!

You can also sign up to the Buddy Scheme Newsletter where we will send you information about events from the Students’ Union, International Student Societies, University and across Belfast that we think would interest you.
